Dimples give your smile an extra charm. You can get this extra charm very easily now-a-days. If you do not have natural dimples, creating them is easy with today's advanced technology medical procedures. This is generally a minor surgical procedure carried out under local anesthesia. The results of this procedure are generally permanent.

A dimple is naturally formed when there is a small defect in the cheek muscle. The skin that is over this defect gets stuck down when the muscle contracts while smiling. The overlying skin indents to create a dimple.

This dimple, as mentioned earlier can be created artificially. Here, we discuss how a dimple is created. We will also check the risks involved and recovery. Pre and post operative care is also important for a successful operation.

Procedure

The procedure is fairly simple and as mentioned earlier, it is done under local anesthesia. This means that you will be wake during the procedure. If you would rather be sleep, you can talk to your doctor and special arrangements can be made. The procedure takes around 20 minutes and hospital stay is not required. You can go home right away. You can get back to normal routine life soon after the procedure is complete.

A punch biopsy instrument is placed against the inner cheek and circular motions are made. A core is removed, leaving the skin intact. This creates a cylindrical defect under the skin which is later closed by an absorbable suture. The skin flattens out after a few weeks.

Recovery and Post Operative Care

You will notice some swapping after the procedure. This is very common and can be taken care of by raising your mouth regularly with an antiseptic solution as prescribed by your doctor. In general, the healing time for this procedure is 7 to 10 days. After a few weeks, the cheek completely heals and dimples become more obvious when you smile. It will take almost a month for the final opportunity to be seen.

It is important that you do not drink or eat anything that is too hot or too cold to avoid thermal burns or cold sores. For a period of at least 15 days after the procedure, strictly observe oral hygiene. Make sure that you complete the entire course of antibiotics that are prescribed by your doctor.

Risks Involved

The most common risks involved in this kind of operation are infection, bleeding, scarring and under or over correction. Dimple creation has very few complications. However, if you notice unwanted dimples without any facial animation, make sure you talk to your doctor and correct it.

Pre – Operative care

There are a few things to be done before the operation. Remember that you must not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the procedure. You will not be allowed to smoke for at least 2 weeks before the surgery. You will also not be allowed alcohol for at least one week before the surgery.
